Film Forum Season 5: Pictures of the True Self

We are continuing to explore what it means to be human and to live well by looking at series of films to see what they say about the ‘true self’.

Throughout time there has been an interest in how we perceive ourselves and how to live authentically or truthfully. From Adma and Eve hiding their nakedness to Narcissus falling in love with his own reflection in Greek mythology. From early Greek philosophy’s command ‘know thyself’ to Shakespeare’s ‘to thine self be true.’ With the increasing focus on the self in our culture as being a primary source of identity, how do we live truthful and meaningful lives?

Season 5’s film selection aims to help us look at the experience of the ‘true self’ in various contexts: in the quest for success, in understanding our emotions, our relationships, our morality and finally how to be true to one’s calling against the odds. You’re invited to join us as we watch five insightful films together.
